does this also mean that you can browse appletalk networks with gvfs with afc? or is this another thing and requires another backend for example with afpfs-ng?

Bjoern: The AFC backend has nothing to do with AppleTalk, AFC is the name of the proprietary protocol used over USB for iPhones and iPod Touches.
