Hmmm...apparently in Europe sports are for everyone, not just the best players, and the population as a whole is more fit. Comment?

No, SFG, the population is not more "fit" and participation in sports in the US and Europe is about the same. In Europe, various amateur soccer leagues, in America softball, flag football, etc.

The big difference is that in Europe, there is less net income (after taxes) limiting spur-of-the-moment fast food, and more walking giving more limited land and higher levels of urbanization. Which also means more crime and violence in daily lives. In America private auto ownership is much higher and people have their own houses not row apartments. This pattern is also found in Canada, New Zealand, and Australia.

But Evil Neocon, if the European population is fit, won't this help them resist the upcoming invasion by Moroccan irregulars in speedboats?

Anyway, it's too simplistic to counterpose communal football to individualistic basketball. Basketball is an intensely team-oriented sport (baseball is actually more individualist than basketball). But basketball is more *improvisational* than sports like football, and hence less oriented toward top-down authoritarian control by a coaching staff. That's more the cultural issue here.
