You should read up on 'regulatory capture', and idea championed by the great American free-market economist George Stigler. The idea is that regulators end up promoting interests of those they regulate, not the consumers they are supposed to protect. This is a more subtle, realistic, less conspiratorial, explanation.

I was going to suggest a spinoff blog called iStan, but it seems that's already a trademark.

Funny… one Stan's a stimulator, the other, a simulator.

One of the best proofs of the legitimacy of an economic principle, marginal productivity, is right on this blog.

Since Fischer put a huge bee in Steve's bonnet the number of comments on Fischer related posts has gone down.

While I don't believe it will ever go to zero, I can't imagine seeing another, say 50+ comment post here ,at least until Steve changes subjects.

Yes, and should he bring up Fischer's PISA scores, they might disappear entirely!

And the fact that the regulators often get highly paid jobs with the entities they regulate has nothing to do with that?

How about the guy who hired Stanley Fischer at Citigroup? Robert Rubin was Treasury Secretary during Clinton's second term. One of the more significant pieces of legislation of that time was the repeal of Glass-Steagall, something that was probably near and dear to Citigroup. And Rubin was not just a bystander in the whole affair - the Treasury Secretary's opinions and influence are not of no import in such a matter.

What we have in this country is a deeply entrenched system of legalized bribery. That those who get greased do so on the back-side of the transaction, rather than up-front, does not make it any less bribery. The system is deeply corrupt.

I have trouble believing that anyone can believe with any degree of certainty that this guy will do a better job than the top ten American candidates for the job. This is an entirely subjective judgment based on selective memories of his accomplishments. It is self-serving for these hot shots to say he's the best, because then, hey they studied under the best.

In terms of precedent though, have you ever wondered what Obama's plans are for the rest of his life? Maybe he would like to go to Kenya and occupy some position of power or better yet lead some greater African coalition...
He probably can't help but see some glimpse of what his dad could've been in Fischer... From Africa, economist, Harvard...

Just another job Americans won't do.

At some point, the real question has to be What is wrong with Us, that we can't drop our patriotism? We, the folks who can't see that being an American citizen is passe now, that who cares about justice, and we too should just take the money and run?

We are not so dissimilar from the dead in Lone Survivor.

The quality of the comments under the Fischer posts is higher than just a few days ago, anony-mouse, excepting ours under this one.

A spurt of posts on one topic may produce fewer comments per post, but more likely to grab and influence new or occasional readers disposed to feel strongly about the topic. And it's not surprising if on this topic in particular Steve wants to influence the debate not keep the peanut gallery fat and happy.

Your Adam Smith jest brought to mind one of my favorite passages from that underrated moral philosopher.

"The pride of man makes him love to domineer, and nothing mortifies him so much as to be obliged to condescend to persuade his inferiors. Wherever the law allows it, and the nature of the work can afford it, therefore, he will generally prefer the service of slaves to that of freemen."

And the number of comments from inbred tribalists who are uncomfortable with inbred tribalists being the butt of Steve's withering sarcasm have gone up. What's your point?

You should read up on ethnic nepotism. This is a better explanation because it better fits the facts, including the unsubtle and unrealistic desire to not see conspiracy.
