The phrase, "the exception proves the rule"is a mistranslation from German. The correct sense of the statement is that the exception tests the rule.

Arthur: You're wrong. In German it is "Die Ausnahme, die die Regel bestÃĪtigt": The exception that corroborates the rule.

Glad to have sparked a debate. However, as the two possible meanings are contradictory, only one can be true. And what the German version may mean has nothing to do with the English version.
