As a child I though about letting down a rope from a satellite to the surface of the earth. One could climb up or even lift other satellites into orbit with this rope. I was told that the rope would tear apart just for its own weight.
At the residential school's bar I learned that the problem was almost solved. Some scientists though about spiders and why their string was so light and strong at the same time. So they did the obvious (for scientists): They fiddled around with some goats' genes and there we go ...
