While I wouldn't describe myself as "the type of person who is annoyed by tiny oddities", I am the type of person who is fascinated and even amused by them. Thanks for sharing this wrinkle in Python exceptions!

Did you try Python 3.8?

@Serhiy Sorchaka: yes, I seem the same result with Python 3.8.0. It is an extremely minor thing. I definitely did not expect this blog post to get as much attention as it got.

I must say that many messages were improved in Python 3.8 compared with previous versions, with a small sample documented here - I document these as I add more cases in Friendly-traceback.

Please file an issue about missing caret. https://bugs.python.org/

@serhiy Storchaka: The caret is not missing; it is simply at a slightly different location than what is normally expected. For anyone reading the traceback, the information given is perfectly fine to determine the cause of the error.

Unrelated: thank you very much for the work you do on Python.

Thank you for catching oddities in Python.

If you find other potential bugs or want to propose enhancements, do not hesitate to open an issue on the Python bug tracker.
