Very interesting! Why did you go with 2nd over 1st edition? Seems like 1st gets a lot more love online at least...

And I know what you mean about 5th edition characters starting out at too high of a power level, makes it harder to keep them tied to a town. On the other hand, then you can throw bigger stuff at them more quickly, and it is also my understanding that the power curve levels off after 3rd (which I have not had any personal experience with).

One thing I like about 2E though is the variety of the monsters in the Monsters Manual. I just used 4hd Hell Hounds against my party and there are two higher level hell hounds just in the base entry. There are three times the number of Dragons age categories and many more dragon types.
I've played an ran parties up to 7th-12th level in 5E. Even Wizards can't seem to make really high level content. TSR seemed to be better at it though I just don't' think 2E characters could attain the levels of power that 5E characters can. I've probably ran 2E characters up to similar levels 7-12 but that took years on the same campaign rather than months on the same campaign.
