hmmm interesting. i can't say i am much of an anderson fan (but i do generally like both tim burton and the coen brothers). but i do appreciate his unique approach to film. i wonder if i will like this one (i thought royal tenenbaums was enjoyable)

Saw this two days ago, and it wasn't at all what I expected (for some reason, I was under the impression it had more of a historical basis than Anderson's films, which I suppose it sort of does though very fancifully, and that its tone was more melancholy and its setting more focused on the hotel). Once I adjusted, I enjoyed it quite a bit, though probably not as much as I will on future revisits. Like you, I think it may be Anderson's most quintessential film.

Since Rushmore and Royal Tenenbaums, I haven't seen any Anderson films that as deftly combine true, humanist pathos with his evocative whimsy. Grand Budapest Hotel didn't quite go into that realm for me either, but it did something with Fantastic Mr. Fox did for me as well - it plunges so deeply into the whimsy that it works perfectly on its own terms (by contrast, Darjeeling and Life Aquatic seem to me to strain for a depth they couldn't quite summon; I wonder if Owen Wilson as co-writer brings that out in him the best).

It's the kind of film I suspect will grow and grow with repeat viewings. It's tough to choose among the visual riches of his work, but that just may be his most beautiful film. It also makes me wish there were movies that a) were framed in the Academy ratio and b) mixed aspect ratios (although I wish the 1.33 wasn't "taller" than the widescreen compositions, a minor pet peeve).

Fiennes was fantastic to the point where I just accept his performance in memory and don't really think of how polished it was - the kind of perfection you take for granted, like that of a great concierge come to think of it.
