Tony: Yes, the performances of McConaughey and Leto are first-rate and anchor this film.

I think the first half of this film is exceptionally well done, as we come to know the character of Woodroof and learn what type of individual he is; McConaughey is mesmerizing in this section.

But the second half of this film- though still watchable - becomes a narrative of his fight with the FDA. It's definitely not as strong as the first part, as the personal story of Woodroof gets lost to some degree amidst his legal battles.

It's a very good film, but one that is a bit overlong (10-15 minutes could have easily been trimmed), as the film tries to take on too much. Better too much than too little, I suppose and I applaud the filmmakers for that, but it does tend to drag toward the last half hour.

While I don't feel as strongly about it as you do, Tom, I don't entirely disagree. Though I'd argue that it has less to do with the narrative shift you mention, and more with Leto's exit from the film. The energy brought to the film by the inherent tension in his relationship with McConaughey dissipates almost immediately after he's gone.

Tony: Yes that was part of the weakness of the last part as well - nice observation.
