Obviously I love this film, and I think it's a shame it remains out of print save for a Korean DVD of (I'm told) so-so quality. At least the movie is all over YouTube waiting to be watched. Party Girl and Hot Blood have more daring and carefree broadstrokes of color, but they don't communicate on as deep a level as the painted skies and suggestive garb of these characters. Along with Powell/Pressburger's one-two punch of Black Narcissus and The Red Shoes, I think this is the pinnacle of old-school post-production color.

I too am, well, not surprised of course but disappointed in Crowther's reaction. It's so flagrantly and defiantly anti-McCarthy, and so bold in its aesthetic, that I don't see how even a guy like him could miss it. But I do know some who are not as won over by the film as I, much as it almost baffles me. McCambridge's frozen rictus of Satanic glee is definitely of my favorite single shots in cinema.

Yeah, this is one of the melodramatic greats. Western or not. You give the film its due, Tony. Both for Nicholas Ray and the underlying politics. Great stuff. Plus, the scene chewing and sexual bent by Joan Crawford and Mercedes McCambridge in their performances is such an entertaining hoot. Hopefully, somebody will finally release this 50s classic to disc. It's long overdue. Thanks for this.

I'll add my voice to both of yours in demanding that this get a proper DVD/Blu-ray release. Arguably, JOHNNY GUITAR is second in popularity only to REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE among Ray titles.

Thanks for commenting, Jake and le0pard13.
