wow. i rather liked it, and thought it was as emotion-filled as a spaghetti western could be. it's a risky take on the period and Django's story. but i appreciated it.

I completely agree with your thorough analysis of 'Django Unchained', Tony. The portion of the film after DiCaprio exits the movie is very disappointing, and also surprising because conflict in most Westerns is resolved in a gun fight between the primary hero and bad guy (Earp vs. Clanton, Munny vs. Little Bill, etc.), not in the falling action manner of this film.

I did think that most of the supporting performances fit the different tones of the film, especially the work by Waltz, DiCaprio, and even Johnson.

I believe Tarantino is better when the focus is tight like in his first few films. Even INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS, which I like very much, consists of only about 16 extended scenes. But his attention to detail (and logic) seems to wane when his movies get too sprawling, like the two KILL BILLs (but mostly the first one) and in this case, DJANGO UNCHAINED. They just seem to lack internal consistency. In DU, I think he just didn't know how to adequately end it after Waltz and DiCaprio exit. And as someone once said, when there's a problem with the ending, it usually has to do with the beginning. The character of Django himself is sort of a superhero compared to the rest of the people in the film, so we basically get an ending couched in superheroics instead of the more fascinating ethical discussion fueled by the tensions between Django, Schultz, Candie and Stephen.
