This is a great point. In my own take on the film, I said the characters were God but I suppose this is more true of the first film - where the hubris of the character is more pointedly observed (in the '86 Fly Goldblum is more of a loner and a freak, dedicated to his science not really a alpha male trying to have it all).

I guess the point hold inasmuch as youth allows us to humor a notion of immortality, which age slowly robs us off. In that sense, Goldblum's pride is "profane" but now more so than the average human's.

admittedly, i have seen the original fly only once, during my university days, and waived it aside as a sort of interesting b-movie, but of no value when compared to cronenberg's remake... i have recently purchased the dvd box set containing all of 'the flies' and will sure give it a second look...
