I am no fan of this film, sorry to say. I read the novel upon release and was looking forward to this for a very long time. But it's a ghoulish and epiosodid film with the typical stereotypes and stock set pieces, but I'll give Mortenson his due and the cinematography of course is exquisite.

This is quite the impassioned capsule here!

Sam (and Jason Bellamy) are already aware of my differing opinion with them over The Road, which is my second favorite film of the year so far. I agree that Hillcoat and Joe Penhall don't quite approach the entire escalating threatening mood of McCarthy's novel, but the lasting effect, in the end, was- as you so eloquently put it- haunting. It's not as bold as the novel was, but as cinema, it certainly takes more risks that several other films from this year, which is why I admire it so.
