Hi Tony,

I liked your review. I loved 'Eyes Wide Shut,' but I definitely see your point—Cruise's performance is brutally flat; his acting comes through better during the masked orgy when we can just barely see his eyes, but while I do see what you mean about the resolution being "quaint," I think it's quaint in an important way.

More now than ever society pushes us to fulfill our desires. "To do what's never been done, win what's never been won," but of course most dreams don't come true. The beauty of life is the tension between our dreams and reality, and the 'quaintness' at the end of "Eyes Wide Shut" is just the acceptance of that tension.
Look at Kidman's face. While she is quaintly saying they should go home and "fuck," she is clearly disturbed and sad. She's very hurt by Cruise's little Orphic journey, but the point is that they go on trying to discern fantasy from reality together.
