It was not Hackman's debut. In 1964 he co-starred with Beatty in "Lilith". Beatty liked him immediately and made Hackman first choice for the part of Buck Barrow.

In fact, I wrote that it was Gene Wilder's debut... not Gene Hackman's.

And I also related the story of how Hackman met Beatty in Lilith midway through the post.
