I'm glad that somebody else covered this film, as I was expecting it to get overlooked. As a fan of Cronenberg, I think that it's a sorely underrated film, especially seeing as it's the last work he's done from his own screenplay (so far). Furthermore, however, I'm also primarily interested in the film as a game designer myself, and have found it a rather motivating thing to watch. The question of what the actual "game" of "eXistenZ" is, exactly, is a very thought provoking one-- the best way of describing it would seem to be that it's some sort of organic system that culls a set of goals and conditions from the collective subconscious of its participants, and arranges them into some kind of narrative progression. Basically, it's a shared dreaming system, and a far more plausible one than what we saw in "Inception".

I really enjoyed this post and it is great to see eXistenZ getting some love as I've always felt that it was one of the more underrated and underappreciated films in Cronenberg's filmography. I really need to watch this again as it has been years but I do remember Jennifer Jason Leigh being so good in this one.

Your eloquent appraisal of this film has definitely got me wanting to watch it again!

Thanks for noting that it's difficult to know what's coming in this film; it's very disorienting, a feeling that I love. I remember that the film (despite its obvious sense of humor and camp stylization) actually made me shiver in fear because I really didn't know what was going to happen. Most horror/scifi films are so formulaic that it's hard to be surprised by them. This one is different.
