in my own opinion this is kubrick's best movie. i am one of those people who find the faults you've listed in his work, aside from this.

Nice post. I just caught up with this film last month, and it's a great heist movie. I'm becoming a bigger Hayden fan with every performance I see.

Hayden is actually my favorite actor. I can't put my finger on exactly why. He's not the best actor nor the most well known. But he certainly projects a certain "genuine article" sort of vibe with a cool kind of charisma. If you haven't seen them yet, I recommend JOHNNY GUITAR, THE LAST COMMAND (both discussed elsewhere on this site), TERROR IN A TEXAS TOWN, and THE LONG GOODBYE.
