Nice review. I haven't seen the movie or read the book. I kind of want to do both, but not sure what order I should do it in. I'm thinking I might like the movie more if I see it first...but I'm also afraid if I don't like the movie, I'm not gonna read the book that just got loaned to me. Any thoughts on what I should do?

Don't ruin the experience of the book. Read that first.

The movie is not awful, but it's not worth ruining the experience of the book which is truly great.

Oh my lord...Snyder uses both "The Sound of Silence" AND "Hallelujah"? Forget it. No way am I going near this movie. However, I DO think it takes a strange person to get off on the power of wearing a costume and thus become a superhero.

the song choices were pretty unimaginative and overall the movie did nothing to add to the comic. without the pirate comic within the comic the story loses its metaphorical weight and the little changes throughout were pointless. james, definitely read the comics or watch the video comic...it's truly worthwhile. the movie ended up being what many of the pre-release detractors said it would be: completely unnecessary.

I loved they way they bridged different generations throughout Watchmen, both with props (like the floppy discs) and with music

I've finally got to watch it yesterday. For the most part, I truly loved this movie with many of the faults you've mentioned plus a few of my own. Namely, the soundtrack could have been done with less pop songs like 99 Luftballoons, Sound of Silence and Everybody Wants to Rule the World. The Philip Glass score set against Dr Manhattan's backstory was the perfect blend of visual and auditory treats for this fanboy.
Also, back when the graphic novel came out, this book reflected those times - the 80's. Now, we had 9/11 which was more terrifying than the story of WWIII. The looming threat the book kept hitting home through out the book was totally lost on the screen. I wonder if this would have worked to update this major threat or to have some version thereof.
I'm sure that when this movie will come out on dvd, with extended scenes and with the Black Freighter storyline, Watchmen will play much better.

monty, i'm with you on the philip glass score. i only wish they'd stuck to an original score thru the whole thing instead of giving it specific context with the pop songs.

as for the impending blu-ray completist version, i've got some thoughts of my own
