I don't really get why we have to pit these movies against each other. I mean...there's room to like them both, and for different reasons, even if they are both similar and dissimilar. I'm very much looking forward to ALL IS LOST...but I would be surprised if it takes GRAVITY's wonder down a notch. And, though I know you're joking or trying to be clever at the end...but, yeah, I'd rather be with Redford, because he's supposed to be a professional. Bullock's character is a rank amateur, astronaut-wise, but it's not really a fair comparison. But if you're comparing the performances...well, I hardly believe that either one of them will suffer because of the other's existence.

Jeffrey Wells made a good point (yeah, finally, huh?) about Bullock in GRAVITY. And this is no reflection on her as an actress... okay, maybe a little bit for not being more demanding. But, her character is similar to any damsel in distress asked to rise to the occasion during a crisis. This is a medical engineer who has gone through hundreds of hours training to be in space and deal with such crises. But how is she any different from the girl asked to keep the bus going at a steady clip in SPEED?

I still love GRAVITY for its technical achievements and it's ability to engage. But there's no question that ALL IS LOST has similar themes and has more "soul."

I'm sorry if you think I'm pitting them against each other. But I could hardly make my point without using GRAVITY as a point of departure.
