Aye, Tony, you are dead-on with this most perceptive essay that acknowledges an independent neo-noir feature from Down Under that too few seem to know about. The use of Sydney locations (Tony d'Ambra has stated he has driven past a number of the warehouses hundreds of times during his life) gives the film a striking authenticity, and stylistically -as you note - the film slowly builds tension. This passage here from your review really asserts its most admirable qualities:

"A cliche story involving money and murder right out of James Cain's novels becomes something more with the Edgerton brothers' application of location and temporal setting; a summertime Christmas in a small Australian town where it seems you can't make a move without some neighbor or other finding out becomes a convivial nightmare populated by scores of potential witnesses to the crimes Ray is forced to commit."

The performances here are outstanding, and some of the garbled speech seems to be another authetic touch, as difficult as it may be to navigate at times. You are right certainly to cut off further discussion, as the surprises are integral to the first viewing.

I wonder, Tony, did you see the fantastic Australian short SPIDER (also directed by Edgerton) that preceded the film, and has since been coupled with it? Talk about "jolts." Wow.
