I like Byrne. I like Fassbender. I like McAvoy. And I still can't get myself to give this a chance, in part because it's not my genre of choice, and also because I'm just confused: so this is a prequel, in a sense, right? Or a sequel to Origins?

P.S. Lawrence was also flat in The Beaver. I fear we've seen her best already. I hope not.

I feel like the comic book heroics here are outweighed by the Bondian action, Jason, so I'd check it out. It's the perfect summer movie, a fun trifle. BTW, it is a prequel to all of the X-Men movies. 1-3 take place in present-day. WOLVERINE is set in the 80s. FIRST CLASS is set in the early 60s.

Lawrence was in THE BEAVER?

PS: LOST creator tweeted his reaction to this film last night and I almost bust a nut laughing at his characterization of January Jones as Emma Frost. I quote:

Emma Frost's THREE mutant powers: Telepathy, Transformation to Solid Diamond and last but not least, Sucking at Acting.

Ha! It's a low blow, but it's certainly effective!

I've only seen her in Mad Men (although I've heard horror stories of her other appearances), and I've always thought that some of the recent backlash against her was somewhat tied to people's distaste for the character, which of course would suggest that she doesn't suck at acting.

With Jones I wonder if Betty is a character she can't get away from. I hope that isn't the case for Lawrence, too.

P.S. Thanks for the history on the series. Sincerely. I was confused.

If I can find a way to work this in, I will.

I'd just stepped out of Super 8 and this was about to start next door. If not for your review, praising Fassbender, I'd never have given it a chance (not even for Byrne). But I'm glad I did. Some troublesome patches, for sure, but the moments that work make it well worth watching.

Wow, Jason, you paid me the highest compliment one can pay a critic. Hope I'm able to pay it back sometime soon.
