Hmmmm i preferred the first film by far. I liked Grillo, and other moments in this sequel, but i think DeMonaco bit off more than he could chew in this one. By removing the characters from a controlled environment (their home), he was faced with the task of telling the story without borders--and with more pieces. It just felt random at times, and contradictory. I liked the horror aspect, but I think the focus was a bit erratic in this one.

One thing that just makes no sense is the creepy masks - why bother hiding your identity if there's no repercussions -if your actions are legal? It makes zero sense. I guess its scary but it's also trite - and only really works in the otherwise aggravating THE STRAnGERS. Glad you like it, but what about the score? Electronic synths or the usual hackneyed orchestra?

@Erich,

I don't entirely agree on the masks. The criminology major in me believes that, legal or not, people would still choose to hide their identity, fearing personal repercussions post-Purge. Or even the kind of "justice" the film's lead wants to mete out at the next opportune Purge.

The score is an electronic/orchestra fusion. Here's a sample: http://www.shocktillyoudrop.com/news/359669-exclusive-listen-to-a-sample-of-the-purge-anarchy-score-here/
