Enjoyed reading this, though your opening paragraphs were thoroughly depressing (if these young Turks are now elder statesmen, where are their successors? it seems like time is slipping by why simultaneously standing still). No kidding, I actually felt kind of blue after I read it!

The rest is a pick-me-up though, and I'd love to see this film. I'm really intrigued by Cronenberg's early work - between this write-up, Moon in the Gutter's picture tribute to Rabid, and the recent horror countdown entry on The Brood (which I really, really, really want to see now) I can't wait to check it out.

I like the sound of these too - truthfully, more often than not particularly with post-70s auteurs I need to get that spark of excitement from a director's early work before I return to and further appreciate their later stuff. (De Palma's another example - other than Scarface, I didn't really dig him until I watched Greetings & Hi, Mom!) The rawness hits a more direct nerve than the slicker stuff I find.
