Dennis and Peet, I can't begin to express how impressed I am! This is most definately a more thorough analysis on Body Double than one might originally expect. You guys put a lot of thought into looking at the movie. I like your theory of the drill murder serving as an allusion to penetration; I never thought of that before.

I also think that Craig Wasson is well-cast. Some might assume he's a brainless Hollywood puppet of the 80's, but De Palma puts him to good use. Sort of like what he later did with Josh Hartnett in The Black Dahlia.

And even though sequences are recycled from Dressed to Kill, I became giddy every time that happened. As you say, De Palma is giving the finger to his critics and to the MPAA. You don't like potent sex and violence? You don't like Hitchcock homages? Too bad, you're getting it anyway! he says with the film.

Body Double was CHEESE, but it still takes talent to come up with a CHEESE burger that can be savored. One reason why Body Double, makes one of the best CHEESE stuff, is that it never takes itself too seriously. I think BDP wanted to make a straight forward thriller, coated with enough dollops of sex and violence.

Honestly though for me the "powerdrill" murder scene, was nowhere as unsettling as Scarface's chainsaw murder scene. Again the shock in Scarface, was not the actual decapitation, it was the atmosphere, Pacino's expression of shock, disgust and anger, the chainsaw whirring in the background, Hector casually cutting up Angelo, taking it as just another day to be done. The "powerdrill" scene in Body Double, was pure camp for me, but BDP manages to get the tension flowing, Craig Wasson running, intercutting with Debbie being chased, and then the final moment.

Also Body Double had a really innovative opening credits, showing it against the backdrop of the movie sets, the 60's style hero going in a car, background racing away.

For me the best scene in Body Double though would be Craig Wasson, getting stuck in a tunnel, cars all around, sounds blaring, unable to move out because of his claustrophobia.

Also loved the takes on the Porn movie industry, though i felt BDP's look was more kind of tongue in cheek, unlike Boogie Nights, that showcased the more seedier and darker side.
