What a thoughtful, fascinating read! This is one of my all-time fave Cronenberg films and one I've watched many times and still enjoy time and time again.

What struck me about it in recent years is how prophetic it was in some respects as Cronenberg anticipates reality television (so much so that Max has a hard time figuring out what is real and what is Videodrome) and the recent trend in torture porn horror films with all the Videodrome footage that, at times, eerily anticipates films like HOSTEL.

Really enjoyed your write-up on this film. Incidentally, have you read Tim Lucas' book on VIDEODROME? It features a fantastic, in-depth look at the making of the film.

Mind? Blown.

That was fantastic, Kevin. Now I'm regretting my decision not to have picked up the Criterion edition the last time they ran their 50% deal.

One thing you mentioned here that I've missed during my viewings of Videodrome is Cronenberg's symbolism of doors. I must go back and look that that again!

I don't know if I'd say Videodrome is a completely humorless film: I laugh during Max's flirting with Nicki during the show, and at Max's "We can take a shower whenever you feel like it, Masha" (and Masha's reply: "You're too old for me, Max!"). I get what you're saying about how it lacks the dark comedy of a Lynch film, though.

Fabulous, fabulous, take a Bow. One of the best articles I ever read on one of the most twisted up Cronenberg movies. As you have rightly mentioned, while the movie has enough scenes of Body Horror and Gore, the overall theme, of the Media and the Networks, controlling the Mind of ordinary people, manipulating it, and quite often leading them to Destruction, remains much more Relevant today, in this age of "Simulated Reality TV shows" and "Manufactured News".

Thanks for the kind words. It was a lot of fun to digest this film upon my recent viewing. It had been years since I initially saw VIDEODROME, and I was shocked, too, by what you refer to as Cronenberg's prophetic commentary about reality television and films like HOSTEL.

I haven't read Lucas' book, but I'm definitely curious about it...his name popped up a lot when I was looking up some resources online. Is it easy to come by?

Chris:

Wow. Thanks for the kind words! Yeah, the Criterion disc is a wonderful transfer of the film, and it has some great special features.

Adam:

Yeah, I was primarily speaking of the lack of dark humor in the subtext like that of which is found in Lynch's film. I agree, though, that Woods has some hilariously, smarmy lines.

The door thing is something I didn't recognize until the most recent viewing. I have to say: the recent writings of Jim Emerson -- and his plea for people to look at what's on the screen and how the visuals tell us something about the narrative and the characters' motives -- have really influenced me in looking more closely at a film the second and third time. So that's what I tried to do here, and the scene with the doors and the windows is a perfect representation for what Emerson is urging people to look more closely at.

Thanks for reading, Adam!

Thanks so much for the kind words! I really appreciate it. I think that VIDEODROME is one of Cronenberg's most layered and brilliant films.

Don't take my absence in the comments section personally, Kevin. I've just been reluctant to admit that this MC of the Cronenberg Blogathon has NEVER SEEN VIDEODROME!!!

But a NY Times article I just read brings news this morning that it will be making its way to Blu-ray on December 7th. By tomorrow afternoon I sould know whether it's a Criterion release.
