"Q&A" is an excellent movie, and definitely deserves a place in any canon of great cop movies. I'm glad to read that you were able to make some psychological connections between Nolte's character in "Q&A" and Connery's role in "The Offense" (which I would also include in any list of underrated Lumet movies- what an opening to that film).

My only personal complaint with "Q&A" is how dated it feels. There seemed to be a major emotional disconnect in the scene where one of the major characters is killed and there is a horrible pop song playing in the sound foreground. The prescence of the bright pop song (which might have been by Ruben Blades, I don't know the song) clearly is not being played for irony, and the murder of the character just feels cheesey instead of powerful with the poor song playing over the action.
