ACK we had this carpet in our basement when we bought our house. Loose laid, thank God. The owners were total swingers--this lava carpet, low hung groovy lights, a hardwood bar, *flocked* trellis wallpaper with yellow daisies... The stairs to the basement were painted bright orange. It was pretty awesome.

First there is that orange, that "somewhere, there is a naked traffic pylon" kind of orange. Then the Linoleum, and some kind of other shag, and then whatever is on the screened in back porch.
Holy buckets, that's some ugly flooring. Yet the drapes in the bedroom that appear to be the color of mildew are actually worse, I think.

They moved out, and the new owners redecorated, in 1968 presumably. That family probably had two kids, who have now grown and have now escaped the bizarre combination of constant rainy weather outside and eternally burning interior.
At least it's bright. It's the brightest flooring i've ever seen.
But i love the confidence that they didn't just try the lava carpet in one room they were like "f*ck it. This is perfection. This carpet must go in every room. This is phenomenal"
What decor goes with this carpet? Jim & Pam's immovable clown painting?
Blake! Our game was called "poison floor." You'd think we would have just left the room to avoid the poisoned floor, but we just kept on finding things to stand on/jump to in order to...ya know...not get foot poisoned.

What about the use of pillows? The way we played, you could throw a pillow on the lava floor to jump on if you couldn't reach the next destination. I've heard people say they didn't play that way; it was considered cheating. Your thoughts?
Pillows are perfectly legal when playing Don't Let Your Feet Touch the Burning Hot Lava, blake. As is getting in the laundry basket and scootching yourself along.

Pillows were used to make a trail to a chair or couch that was too far to jump to. My friend's mom did a lot of sewing and spare fabric pieces would be strewn around to use as islands for jumping on. If I remember correctly any adults who entered the room unaware of the danger were pronounced dead on sight. My thoughts are anything that can be used to prevent contact with lava/poison are totally acceptable.

Anon, while looking for houses last year I found even more forms of really ugly flooring packed into houses that were smaller - less than 800 square feet.

ooooh I grew up with that carpeting..i wonder what they will do with it.
when I was 9 I spent the day trying to brush it out and make it fuzzy like other peoples carpets.
apparently the adults I lived with didn't appreciate that...
did you know it also comes in super sunshine yellow and pea soup green?
