what kind of tragic renovation accident resulted in that slash across the gentleman's chest? Are there going to be blood stains that can't be removed?

I'm afraid to see where they've put the dryer.

Actually, having the washing machine in the bathroom is pretty common in places like Germany where space is tight. Love the blog and have recommended it to several people who have become readers as well.

I dunno. I don't think those two look *that* bad. They need a makeover, but a full on renovation? Nah.

Eeek! My small 1 bdrm outside NYC has the washer dryer in the bathroom - about 18" from the toilet. My mom dubbed it: the S*it n' Spin...

Hmmm, after what I've seen on House Hunters International, the bathroom was probably the biggest room that a washer could be hooked up in!!

Reminds me of one of my favorite shirts. It says, "Before".

I do not understand this. Do they carry their wet sopping clothes through the house to the dryer?

And I don't buy that they dry them outdoors - where I live that's only possible about twenty days out of the year, and even then you end up rewashing half of what you dry because of bird poop. Talk about inconvenient!

This is also pretty common in Finland. The bathroom is usually the room where there is a water hookup for the washing machine. My washing machine is separated from my toilet only by the bathroom sink.

Actually it doesn't look that bad. We as "spoiled" Americans may find it odd, but a lot of Europeans live in similar homes. BTW the dryer is on the bathroom wall. It is a fold out air drying rack, most Europeans air dry their clothing. The kitchen remindes me that one can live simply without a lot of gadgets and big appliances.

@Joe - "is that a dishwasher on the wall in the kitchen? the thing looks like it could hold 3 dishes."

It is most likely a continuous (tankless) hot water heater. Most Europeans don't use dishwashers either. Again, not enough space... Their dishwasher is the sink and the wooden rack to dry the dishes. This reminds me of my old kitchen in Germany.

I used to hang my clothes up in the attic when it wasn't nice enough to hang them up outside. European washers spin the clothes so effectively that they are fairly dry already when you take them out.

We live in a fifties house, and the washing machine hookup is in the kitchen.

i agree with you, bonjill. the normal apartment size is anywhere from 50-60sq m (roughly 538-645sq ft). we're (americans) lucky to have a 145sq m apt! but we don't have a lift (we live on the 4th floor) and our washer/dryer is all the way down in the basement. it's a pain to do laundry. i'm, actually, contemplating of putting my washer/dryer in the bathroom.

Let's not speculate about the race, class, or parenting skills of the people who live in these houses. We judge them on the photos they pick, not on who they are as people (unless we really can't help it).
