I think this is probably due to the irrational fear of rats coming up through the toilet, I've heard of people doing such before.

Then again looking at that bathroom maybe the fear is not so irrational.

just found your blog and have been laughing for two days straight. but in response to this particular post...my friend's sister did this for a long time. fear of snakes coming out of the toilet. :)
