[Image] Some of our friends might remember a fun event our family had back in 2008. A relay race where, if my kids beat me, they would win a Wii. I wrote about it here: http://www.hanfamily.com/2008_05_01_archive.html
It has been a really great memory for our family, one of those experiences we often talk about.
We've talked about doing a rematch a few times before but the timing never seemed quite right...until now. The kids have been clamoring for an XBOX 360 w/ Kinect since Christmas and so I finally agreed to set the terms of a new challenge.
The funny part of the first race in 2008 was how sore my legs were. Well, this time around, the kids also pounced on my current condition. On Saturday, I did a rigorous trail run up My Baldy and was quite sore through the weekend. Nevertheless, I was not going to chicken out.
Since the 3.5 years from the first race, my kids have grown quite a bit and all are in much better shape. And so we crafted some rules to even it up. Each of the four children plus Hyeon-Ju would run 800m (two times around the track which is half a mile) while I would run the track 10 times for a total race distance of 2.5 miles.
I knew that I could do it in 7 min miles, or 17:30 minutes. Further, I knew that Michael, Chris, and James would do their 800m legs faster than what I would be running. I figured, however, that Kara and Hyeon-ju would run slower than my pace and so I thought it could be close.
How did it turn out?
1st leg Hyeon-Ju 3:57, Vince 3:30 (Yeah, my plan is working)
2nd leg James 3:02, Vince 3:30 (he caught up and passed me)
3rd leg Kara 4:08, Vince 3:30 (Kara was the big surprise. That is fast for a little 9 year old girl. I passed her after her first lap but didn't get as much separation as I had hoped and so I knew I was toast at this point)
4th leg Chris 2:51, Vince 3:30 (Chris passed me on his second lap)
5th leg Michael 2:41, Vince 3:27 (Yeah...not close)
Team Kids+Hyeon-ju: 16:42 Team Vince: 17:27
Now, where can I find a good deal on an Xbox 360 Kinect???
