Ok, so I'm a little late in even finding this, but, you know me *evil grin* and your rant reminded me about the original HCA version of the story, which does not have such a happy ending. In it, walking is torturous pain, the prince marries another mortal, and mermaid's only hope is to pludge a knife into the sleeping prince's heart. His blood will then turn her legs back to fins. She can't do it and becomes sea foam. the end.

Yeah, let's see Disney animate THAT story! I'd pay good money for that on DVD. :)

i planned to write a post tonight about the reasons i hate the little mermaid, and decided to google it first. there you were. so many valid points!

i think i remember the sea foam and prince stabbing from somewhere in my childhood... disney should have used that ending for children that defy every rule their parents lay down.

well written!

Well, I friggin' hate the Little Mermaid for all the corny dialogue, terrible songs, and -- as you point -- incredibly flawed story line. If I were one of Triton's children other than Ariel, I'd grow up to be an ax murderer. (Example: how about that stupid song where she drops the 'g' on ever single participle? Or how about the stupid invented words of the seagull... that's funny?)

I NEVER liked the Little Mermaid and I still can't understand why so many do. These are all very valid points and I would like to add that her eagerness to leave her friend Flounder doesn't really show her in the best light. I just don't get why anyone who lives 'under the sea' would want to leave! Anyway, thank you for this post. I feel less alone in this.

Now that I'm older, I can't help but notice all these flaws The Little Mermaid clearly displays. Sure I kind of liked it when I was younger, but it never was my top favorite. Now that I'm older, there is no way I can watch such a massively flawed movie that unfairly beat the clearly superior All Dogs Go to Heaven during both movie's inital theatrical release. Unlikeable character, overrated songs, poor writing=Disney's The Little Mermaid.

This blog perfectly sums up why I cannot stand to watch the Little Mermaid anymore. Sure, I kind of liked it when I was little, but it was never a top favborite of mine. I'm surprised this sad joke of a movie beat the clearly superior All Dogs Go to Heaven during both movie's inital theatrical run.
