I saw Paul McCartney on Monday. Wore my favorite Jerry shirt that has been to many shows including his birthday in MI 94'. Walking into Murphy's Bleachers I was bombarded by the smiling woman "IT'S JERRY'S BIRTHDAY!!" Moral - Jerry lives on Thank YOU Professor "For a real good time"
A very enjoyable show! Glad to have heard Believe It Or Not for the first time, and Black Muddy River was quite pleasing. Re: PITB, in light of the comment you made about true believers, I'm bummed to say that it was most likely my least favorite version. I've heard so many wonderful renditions; and, despite the frequency with which it appears in shows, I never, ever tire of it. Every time it starts up, I lick my chops in anticipation of the tasty jam that is to come in the tune's midsection. When the band is really "on" and listening to one another (to borrow your phrase, Professor), it's a beautiful thing. The best term I've come up with to describe it is "murky, yet melodic." It's like it starts out as a happy, bouncy hike on a sunny day; and then the song takes a turn, and the listener is journeying through a dark, dank wood, where a hint of danger lingers on every tentative footstep; and then the storm clouds part, and once again the sun blazes down on the listener's smiling, upturned face. By contrast, the darkness makes the light that much brighter, and I am also more grateful for it as a result. I love it so very much; and, as you can see, I've put some thought into this! This version's jam is filled with discord and chaos, more like a spacey Space (which admittedly, tends to be my least favorite part of most shows)than a song. I simply prefer melodic to chaotic, I suppose. But, the good news is that, by comparison, I appreciate the versions I like even more now. =)
Ultimately, variety is the spice of life, and to each their own. IMHO, all good people are believers in the same universal truths, even if we articulate and express our beliefs in differing fashions.
Anyway, I appreciate having been inspired to profess and articulate my love for (what I consider to be) a good PITB!

This week we have a fine second set from July 29th, 1988 to entertain us as we reflect on how fortunate we were to have Jerry Garcia share his talents with us. This is a great example of a late 80s second set, with an unusual China Cat->Crazy Fingers->I Know You Rider to open the set. This is followed by a Playin' in the Band which really gets out there - Barlow remarked that this one would separate the true believers from those who weren't:)
I also just love the rare but wonderful 'Believe It Or Not' a song that fits the ballad position perfect and was all too rare..
I hope you enjoy this one as much as I do, and while its been 16 years since we lost Jerry what he left us to enjoy is such a treasure that I can only rejoice in his life.. thanks for sharing the ride.
