1175. This unidentified piece of hardware was submitted by a visitor who found it in an old barn in upstate NY. His description of it: It appears to be have been hand forged by a blacksmith. The rectangular portion is 14" long by 1 1/2 " wide --- the pointed portion is 8 " long and 1 1/2" wide at the end joining the rectangular portion. Both portions are flat and a fairly consistent 1/4" thick.
There is no evidence that this tool was part of something more complex --- it appears more like a stand alone hand tool. And there are no wear marks or hammer marks to indicate that it was perhaps used as some kind of splitting or other tool --unless it never got to be used for its intended purpose.
