837 looks like something you would put a ball of string or yarn into and thread it through the hole to control how it pays out. So the ball of thread/yarn doesn't jump or run away.

Hi! Nifty blog you have. Found my way here from Neatorama. There is an odd little store in my hometown that I visited once after years of curiosity, and though many things were quite highly priced it was fun to peruse. If you are ever in that area, maybe you would like to visit!
It's called:
Lynn Hardings Antique Instruments of the Professions and Sciences
Location and Phone#: 103 West Aliso Street Ojai, CA 93023 (805)646-0204
The shopowner prefers scheduled appointments, but I just stopped by and rang the doorbell. Anyway, I thought you might be interested. The town is about 90 miles north of L.A., and about 10-15 miles inland from Ventura.
Sounds like an interesting shop, I don't have any plans to travel to the west coast, but next time I'm in the area I'll definitely take a look. Thanks

The collaboration with Neatorama continues this week, Alex is posting another of my photos and once again offering a t-shirt for the correct answer. His web site is one of the few that I visit every day, if you enjoy surfing the web, it's a great place to start.

The owner of an unidentified tool sent in a link to a page of photos of it, maybe someone here will recognize this one.

837 looks like a voting box. You put a white or black marble in the box to vote.
