Wow, look at the toe nails and the teeth - they could do some damage! Will you be able to do anything with the pelts? I do love seeing beavers and their dams. But, I've also seen the deforestation they cause in making them. I had never really thought about the water issue, however. Thanks for enlightening!
Holy crap! I've never seen one of those up close! Their "hands" almost look human except for being webbed. And teeth? Talk about being "BUCK"! Well, I don't like killing of any kind, but I understand that you have to do what you have to do. It was better for everyone. Thanks for opening this city girl's eyes.
That looks like a old Beaver ! I know what you mean we had alot of ground hogs move into our fields and as much as we hated to we had to get rid of them as they were causing to many holes and we didnt want any of our animals to get cought in them and break their legs. Farming has its goods and bads but thats just the way it is ! Have a great day ! PS love the nighty and the slippers !
That's so very true. Although many folk may not understand sometimes ya just got to bite the bullet and make the choice for the 'big' picture of life on a farm.
Oh man! I wish I had been there. I've never seen or touched a real beaver. So cool! Very unfortunate for the critter, but, like you said, some decisions are tough, but must be made for the livelihood and safety of all.
Will you be skinning the beavers and using their fur? Would be neat to make a pillow out of their fur. Those tails and feet are so coll close up, too. What does the tail feel like? Leather? Rubber? Smooth? Rough?
Oh! And how could I forget to comment on your outfit....You are a true vision of a real farm girl, getting the job done no matter what you're wearing...and pretty hot in purple, too. oooh la la! :D
I've never seen a beaver up close. They're not exactly a picture of beauty, are they? It's a shame that you had to kill them, but it was necessary. You certainly were nicely decked out. Is that your usual hunting gear? So casual in your night gown and slippers. You must dress for the occasion the next time.
I totally understand farm life versus wild life. I always worry when I post about having to get rid of opossums or armadillos. We've lost two chickens already this year to the stupid opossums, not to mention they can give EPM to horses, so I kill any of them I can catch.
That beaver is really cool. I liked seeing the pictures. I've never seen one up close so it was interesting to see them. :) Maggie should be proud. What a feat hauling that guy ashore.

The farmers who are reading this, know that life is not easy on a farm. There are decisions that need be made for the safety and lively hood of all. Sometimes that means, natural wild life loses out.
Water is the life blood of any farming operation. Without water, you can not keep stock, grow things, or raise fish for your personal use. We have a few established ponds along with our live water. We protect them all.
Muskrats and beaver can empty a pond in a short time. Today we had a pair of beaver move into the new pond (about a three quarters acre pond) and were digging through the levy. This is not good. The levy goes, the water goes.
Many times we can co-exist with nature, in this case, we could not. The water is more valuable than two beaver. So do not look if you are faint of heart or an animal rights activist...these are not pretty pictures but sometimes a nessecary thing to do. (And, yes, this is my nightgown!)
[Image]Maggie Mae, one of our Border Collies, was along for the ride. She brought them from the pond. They were so heavy, sometimes, only Maggie's nose was above the water. She brought them completely to the bank of the pond.[Image]Ki-Anne and Cutter check it out but Maggie is very proud of her acquisition and tells them so. They were huge and weighed more than Maggie, the wonder dog.[Image]I do appreciate the beauty of all God's creatures.[Image]Beavers are trapped for their skins.[Image]Their destruction while they are constructing is not good.[Image]Ki-Anne, farm dog in training, is going to be most excellent.
