All honor and thanks to soldiers who fought for their countries. Thanks for sharing this poignant post, Gail. My dad fought in the allied forces in WWII (before I was born) in Europe and North Africa. We also only ever heard the funny stories OR like you, I had big ears as a little girl and heard the very serious side of our soldiers protecting us in faraway countries.

Wonderful post. Your dad shared with you the stories fitting for little ears. Those other stories you overheard were part of the hidden wounds these men carry. We owe these brave men so much for the freedoms we too often take for granted.

I love this glimpse of your dad. How wonderful he was, and how you must miss him! A brave Christian man who served his country and was also a wonderful father. I can just picture you as a child with wide eyes listening to him. His world must have been so new and exciting to a little girl.

What a strong man who held his past, with his present, all together. God bless him and all veterans who came before him.

My father was a bay gunner on a B-29 in 1944-45, which dropped incendiary bombs on Japan. His memories didn't start emerging until the last years.

Great post Gail. My Dad missed serving because of having three small children.

Our neighbor served and told some horror stories of snipers and loosing his best friend because he wasn't wearing his helmet.

War is a horror.
