This is a very cool response to the prompt.......love that the horses go barefoot. I'll bet they enjoy that! Up here our horses' feet are shod, for walking on concrete - not as wonderful as galloping through open fields......loved the ending!
Now, I always thought a horseshoe that way up was inviting the devil to sit in it, and upside down one meant the luck runs out - which brings us to sideways... LOL
I liked the picture, and where the poem went using the items in the photo. Really liked the last stanza..which really brought this poem effectively to a close!
I miss my horses too, even though it's been a good while since we said goodbye... I came across reminders when I moved, my riding hat, a bridle... and now here in this lovely, heartfelt poem
I enjoyed this as a response to both prompts. Both lightness and a bit of sadness. I wonder if horses prefer to be unshod. Never thought about that. LOL
I enjoyed the melancholy at the end... not all poems are autobiographical ! The last two stanzas do an excellent job telling the rest of the story, but I really liked the third stanza describing the historical items. So cool you have these! (I'm assuming they are yours)
Gail, love barefoot horses :-) So sorry they're gone, had to say good bye to mine a million years ago. They never leave us, really and they're definitely romping around in that heart of yours :-)
Oh, touching lines...being an animal-lover, emotions are easy to relate. But,its a magical poem. Never thought, one could write such a beautiful piece on a horse-shoe... The last paragraph is awesome!

The Thing About Rust
Things Carried
[Image]
Empty horseshoe
With rusty nails
Plucked from
The worn trail
Inverted
For good luck
The empty shoe
Stood tucked
Standing in honor
Lying in state
Next to a knife
And a Civil War plate
My horses
Ran barefoot
The shoe
Remains empty
Empty of luck
Empty of horse
Just like my heart
Empty of course

The great thing about an empty heart is that it is there to be filled. Great words and beautifully written.

Making light is often a way we try to cope. I can relate to that.
