I don't know much about the battle of the Alamo, although I've heard about it. I guess it was quite a tragedy. You sure did a good job of describing it. I suppose it's one of those stories that live on in folklore and will always be told one generation after another. xox
Hey, Gail...not sure if you know about the "Flowers for Leontien" that Nancy over at A Rural Journal has going. Perhaps you can hook this gorgeous rose up for Leontien!...:)JP
Gail, we have visited the Alamo several times over the years. We took Rod's mum there once, and there was no free parking close by so she could walk. Rod parked illegally, and I was scared that when we got back, the car would have been towed. He was lucky, though--VERY lucky!!
Gee, I'm singing this to the popular tune and it really is quite fantastic - I mean freakin' beautiful girl. I love this - may I send this on to a friend of mine in Conneticut that would really enjoy it? Thank you so much - Lilly Lah, lah, lah lah, lah, lah, lah, lah :)
Beautiful! The movie is sad too. I visited the Alamo when I went to my nephews graduation from Lackland AF base. It's the kind of place where everyone is silent, out of respect, when walking through it. I didn't know that about the trees either.~Ames
It totally fit the melody so I ended up almost singing it in my head. Fairly badly, but singing regardless. ha!
This was neat imagery, Miss Gail!
Love your writing style.

Style of writing: Any
Pictures: As many as you like

There's a yellow rose in Texas
There's a yellow rose in Texas
Near the Alamo
Said to bloom quite beautifully
Where heroes blood did flow.
Santa Anna's army outnumbered
All those within
But they did not lay down quietly
They fought until the end.
Balls powder and Bowie knives
Unknown weapons they used
Their fight was for freedom
The Mexicans were not amused.
Every person defended
Reloading and handing high
They helped to load old muskets
And kept the powder dry.
The battle ended badly
The heroes made a show
The battle cry adopted
"Remember the Alamo!"
Oft times in early morning
People see
The yellow rose of Texas
Weeping for the free.

The Alamo is one of my husband's favorite historical events. I will have to share this with him.
=)

(not favorite in the sense that he doesn't care about the lives lost, of course...but in the sense that it moves him)
=)
