Gail, what wonderful pictures - we have fledgling cardinals here too, however, no males. You did the right thing by not disturbing it and letting it recover on its own. These photos and story are superb. Thanks for sharing.
This time of year I always worry for the baby birds. It is such a dangerous time for them just learning to fly and so many don't make it but rather fall prey to other birds or animals due to inexperience. So glad your little one made it : )
I think I've hit that door...on more than one occasion. I'm a bit hardheaded. A little bird flew into my office window last year and I was so worried. The husband said it would get up and be fine. And it was. But I hated that it happened. I always want everything else to avoid those lessons from the school of hard knocks. :)
Poor thing. Lucky thing! Tucker snatched up a fledgling Robin who ran into our window. He didn't get a chance to recover. However, the two ??? birds he caught in one mouthful may have lived to tell another day after they were released from their imprisonment in his mouth. Glad your baby had a chance to recover in peace!
I thought the end of the story was going to be that one of the cats had gotten it. I'm glad that didn't happen. It was a pretty bird. The color is incredible. You don't see anything like it around here. xox
Gail, poor little thing. I feel like that sometimes. Like I'm just flown into a solid door. I'm glad he recovered and flew off. Life's lesson's can be harsh!
I hope it learned its lesson too, and it just wasn't some crazy 'dare' from its siblings! :-)
I hope you're having a good weekend!!

This new fledgling learned just that lesson yesterday afternoon. It's difficult to learn how to fly. This one flew right into the door, no windows to fool it, just a solid door. Kathump! I wondered what the sound was. There sat the poor bird, dazed, eyes half closed, legs danging in this crack wings spread. I did not disturb it because it was still breathing.
I kept checking through the window, hoping it would revive. Such a pretty little thing I took no pictures through the window then waiting for the happy pictures of when it revived.

It slowly came around gathered its feathers properly about and rested for some time. Later, it had flown away to learn more life lessons, hopefully easier than this one was.

Happy he picked himself up, dusted himself off and got on with the day . . . I wonder, lesson learned?

I'm so glad it didn't die! I watch out for fledgelings, too.

What a pretty little bird! I hope the rest of its lessons are easier than that first flying lesson.
