Until today you could put what I know about persimmons in the spoon. Haha. I love the photos and I had no idea about the spoon fork knife thing and this is so cool and that is most definitely a spoon. I live to learn and love to learn and almost always learn something new here
So that is what that tree is in my back yard. Thanks. Sure looking spoon like to me. At least wet will be drought busting. I never turn down water in any form.

That is so cool. I love this old-time lore. I think there are reasons it was told, and that it has survived. I do fear a wicked winter here. It has been very, very mild. We will pay.
This is so cool!! I have never tasted a persimmon, and don't remember seeing any in the grocery store. Seems like they are the forgotten fruit. I wouldn't really know what to do with one if I had it. Except predict the weather. I am looking in the grocery store this week and buying one, how fun to do this!
Papa Bear remembers eating persimmons as a child, and his mother making persimmon jelly. He hadn't heard this about the seeds, but we have to agree those are spoons, hope you find a fork shape soon!! :-)
You know, I can't get to our wild persimmon tree right now, the ground on that part of the property is very wet (and I'm not fighting off water moccasins, ha). But I will definitely see if I can get out there at some point and get some. I did eat some once, not sure what happened but it was the most astringent thing I ever had. I thought I was going to die because my throat closed up. Maybe overripe, underripe, not sure. But I'd love to check out some of the seeds. Thanks!!
And I am sure a persimmon is much better at predicting weather than our forecasters - I have never heard of this before, it's so interesting! Wish I had a persimmon tree.
Never had these or heard of them...the spoon is there for sure. My Dad could read the weather very well, land or water. Very interesting, this persimmon tree.
Hello!:) Hubby and I have been eating persimmon for several weeks now here in Portugal, and the weather has been sunny and mild at 15deg's for months. I have never heard of their seeds predicting the weather, but what fun, and it's something I will try out.

We have many trees over the farm. Persimmons are edible. Humans and birds gather them by day. Deer and night creatures consume them when dark falls.

It is said the seeds when split predict the winter weather.

Hubby split some seeds.
Spoon means wet heavy snow.
Fork calls for feathery snow and a mild winter.
Knife is for icy cutting winds.

Looks like a spoon to me!

Double checked. No doubt about it being a spoon.
Five seeds later I'm still trying to find a fork prediction with no luck.

This is interesting. I have already heard predictions of a bad winter.....the seeds seems to agree.
Let's try to remember it and review next spring.
We have persimmons here too. I will try to collect some and see if mine agree with your southern ones.

That is so cool, I'll have to check our persimmons here! I'm hoping for a fork too!

If we had them here they would need a new shape. One that means you aren't getting winter again this year. Ha!

Gail, someone up here split a persimmon and found the same thing, I think we are in for it! I think you are having a birthday this week, am I right???
November 13, 2016 at 4:02 PM
We were discussing this at work this Friday. I don't want a spoon winter!
November 13, 2016 at 5:26 PM
Yes all our signs point to a heavy snow winter. I have heard that Persimmon Bread is really good. Keep looking for a fork! :)
November 13, 2016 at 5:41 PM
You have time to prepare!
Be safe and God bless, Gail.

All the best Jan

I love that! Look like a spoon to me too.

Would have to buy a persimmon at the store, but it would have to be imported. Then, the indicator would not be for our dried up state. Dang.

I'm sure the short spring, and light summer are true predictors as well for a harsh winter.
