Around 500 million years ago, the Appalachian mountain chain stretched from Alabama into Canada and was taller than the Himalayas. In comparison today, they look like foothills.

I'm not sure about your location, but a lot of those house-sized rocks were carried and dropped by the ice age glacers.

I too wonder what the dogs were looking for. Under that rock looks like a good safe place away from winter storms.
