I am so glad you tested out this (and all other) hear-say....however, I do hate slugs when they climb on the dogs food and leave their slimy trail all across the kibble! Please let me know if you find a cure for those suckers!!....:)JP

There is a disease which dogs can catch from the mucous left behind by snails - here in UK it is an ever increasing problem as it can evetially lead to liver failure. I don't have all the exact facts but sufficient to know that the dogs bowls should always be washed. I am sure you do and please don't think I am rude but just wanted to pass on the little bit of knowledge about this.

Good mprning Gail, try using salt or another salty subsitute for drawing the cirlce. Those slugs don't like it they will turn to foam.

You are a hoot . . . love the circle affect!

I know what does work though, crushed sea shells . . .

You can go to the beach, gather shells, bring them home, crush them in your food processor (laughing yet) and make a circle of the crushed shells around each bowl! The slugs won't cross that circle! Or, if you don't want to go to the beach, swimming pool supply companies sell bags of crushed shells.

In my gardens, I take an empty soda pop plastic bottle, fill it with beer, (diluted) with water (half beer, half water) and lay them side ways, cap off (duh) and the slugs love it. They get drunk and won't be able to climb back out and eat out of the animal bowls!

It works! (messy dead slugs though and bottle isn't good for recycling).

This is GREAT!
Thanks for the smile to start my week! It's all that much better with the photos!

Now....on to *my* crazy thing.
"They" say that horse flies will not go *under* the brim of a straw hat.
Is this true? And...if that's the case...then why aren't all the cows and horses at pasture wearing them?

Have a day full of circles!

Gypsy says, "Yuck, no slugs in my dinner, please!" Tucker reminded her that she never, ever leaves any food in her bowl, so that shouldn't be an issue!

Yeah, I tried that one too. Salt works. :) Also just picking them up and putting them in a can and throwing them in a pond. If you have snapping turtles. My kids did that at my Dad's and had a ball.
I tried beer but it never worked either.
I am glad we moved out where it is so dry and hot we don't have them anymore, That is the only thing that worked. :) As my husband says, life is one big science experiment, just keep trying.

Oh that's too funny! But I so enjoyed your detective skills, and thankfully I haven't had that problem yet with our outdoor kitty food- other unwanted visitors like a raccoon or those long nosed vole is it? But years ago I used a bluish powdered La France clothes softener to keep ants from coming in the back door worked well!

You have to be able to get your hands on a tiny nutmeg scraper and then it doesn't have a handle that lies comfortable in your hand.

Salt is good. I was going to suggest a bowl of cheap beer to confuse them.

Thank you for testing before recommending. Maybe the circle needs to be of something liquid?
