I am so glad you tested out this (and all other) hear-say....however, I do hate slugs when they climb on the dogs food and leave their slimy trail all across the kibble! Please let me know if you find a cure for those suckers!!....:)JP
There is a disease which dogs can catch from the mucous left behind by snails - here in UK it is an ever increasing problem as it can evetially lead to liver failure. I don't have all the exact facts but sufficient to know that the dogs bowls should always be washed. I am sure you do and please don't think I am rude but just wanted to pass on the little bit of knowledge about this.
ok, i can't quit laughing, so glad you did this. all these email forwards that make all these statements, 99 percent are not true. now we know and what a great post it made... still laughing
I know what does work though, crushed sea shells . . .
You can go to the beach, gather shells, bring them home, crush them in your food processor (laughing yet) and make a circle of the crushed shells around each bowl! The slugs won't cross that circle! Or, if you don't want to go to the beach, swimming pool supply companies sell bags of crushed shells.
In my gardens, I take an empty soda pop plastic bottle, fill it with beer, (diluted) with water (half beer, half water) and lay them side ways, cap off (duh) and the slugs love it. They get drunk and won't be able to climb back out and eat out of the animal bowls!
It works! (messy dead slugs though and bottle isn't good for recycling).
This is GREAT! Thanks for the smile to start my week! It's all that much better with the photos!
Now....on to *my* crazy thing. "They" say that horse flies will not go *under* the brim of a straw hat. Is this true? And...if that's the case...then why aren't all the cows and horses at pasture wearing them?
Gypsy says, "Yuck, no slugs in my dinner, please!" Tucker reminded her that she never, ever leaves any food in her bowl, so that shouldn't be an issue!
Salt that works it dehydrates them and they will die off just have to keep the dogs from licking the salt lol ! Or just keep food from hanging around and they will find food else where ! Your not crazy just a fun gal ! Have a good day !
Yeah, I tried that one too. Salt works. :) Also just picking them up and putting them in a can and throwing them in a pond. If you have snapping turtles. My kids did that at my Dad's and had a ball. I tried beer but it never worked either. I am glad we moved out where it is so dry and hot we don't have them anymore, That is the only thing that worked. :) As my husband says, life is one big science experiment, just keep trying.
Oh that's too funny! But I so enjoyed your detective skills, and thankfully I haven't had that problem yet with our outdoor kitty food- other unwanted visitors like a raccoon or those long nosed vole is it? But years ago I used a bluish powdered La France clothes softener to keep ants from coming in the back door worked well!
Try putting a line of salt around the pot. They will hate that.

or just a tad different but that's okay. I'm never bored.
I saw a helpful hint on tv. If you had trouble with snails or slugs draw a circle around your potted plant or whatever you want them to stay out of and they will.
I had to test this theory before I put it in my facts file. I'm not just taking them at their word and spreading information if it's not true.
Slugs have been crawling into the dog food bowls outside if the dogs did not finish their food. Each dog has their own pan. Lil's sets on the porch and was one of the main pans that was filling with slugs.
So here's my chance to prove or disprove this statement. I search for chalk. I find pink sidewalk chalk. I drew a big circle around the pan.
They crossed the line!
I drew circles around them.
They crossed that line.
Then I drew circles around all of them
[Image]
Then Mother Slug shows up!
The chalk line stopped no one.
So when you hear for slug/snail trouble draw a chalk line around the pot, DON'T LISTEN! It doesn't work. I have tested the theory and Lil was my witness. If it makes you feel better, she thought I was crazy too.
I guess this goes back to my wise Granny Pruett again. She always said, "Never believe anything you hear and only half of what you see." The older I get the wiser I realize she was.
Oh, yes, and in lieu of the fancy foot callus remover, a tiny nutmeg grater will work just fine.

Good mprning Gail, try using salt or another salty subsitute for drawing the cirlce. Those slugs don't like it they will turn to foam.

Draw the line with salt and that will stop them!

Love the chalk circles, they add color to a rather slimy situation!

Well, the artwork is interesting!

Good try..some home remedies just do not work..I wonder if the salt works. We don't have many slugs up here:)

You have to be able to get your hands on a tiny nutmeg scraper and then it doesn't have a handle that lies comfortable in your hand.
February 11, 2013 at 5:41 PM
Oh my gosh- you are hysterical! So chalk that one up as a total bust!
February 11, 2013 at 7:11 PM
Salt is good. I was going to suggest a bowl of cheap beer to confuse them.
They need to have you on Myth Busters! ;o)
February 11, 2013 at 8:07 PM
Thank you for testing before recommending. Maybe the circle needs to be of something liquid?
February 11, 2013 at 8:14 PM
Someone suggested beer and I know that works. I wonder if diatomaceous earth would work.
February 11, 2013 at 11:33 PM
Maybe they just think pink chalk is wimpy.
;)
