It is sad that people are being arrested just for having land with ditchweed growing on it. I'm surprised that they did not start forfeiture proceedings against Mr. Green's farm. Newswatch 50 in Watertown, NY reports about the tribulations of Patrick Green: A Lisbon man in federal custody for marijuana possession is free on his own recognizance after his lawyer successfully argued that his only crime was having land where wild hemp grows.
[snip]
a bust in 2003 that was credited as a massive seizure by authorities just 1 mile away from Green's farm is now believed to have been hemp growing wild. The Sheriff said at the time they believed it was marijuana, even though it was apparent there had been no one tending it and was growing at random. There are multiple categories for the type of cannabis eradicated on a DCE/SP report form and one of them is:
Untended Wild/Ditchweed - Wild marijuana that shows no signs of mulching, feeding, watering, clipping, harvesting
Is there any wonder why North Dakota farmers Dave Monson and Wayne Hauge don't want to literally bet the farm on growing hemp?
