I had not seen any Churchill paintings until Fake or Fortune did a programme on Munnings and Churchill, shown here in Australia this year (2016). The Churchill painting was a picturesque scene of a medieval village, said to be somewhere in the south of France.

Now I have no problem with the quality of the work, but they kept saying that the last Churchill sold at open auction fetched £1.8 million!! Perhaps any famous politician or royal who put paint on canvas could become noted as a part-time artist.

Yet if, as you say, Churchill submitted paintings to exhibitions _using a pseudonym_ and had some of his work accepted anyhow, it suggests it was not just his name that counted.
