Why did Sargent specialise in female portraits, do you think? If they were half undressed, he might have been seeking sex appeal. But that was clearly not so. Perhaps wealthy husbands/fathers were prepared to pay for excellent portraits of their family members.

Hels -- I don't know for sure. I know he did many portraits of men as well, but haven't seem a scorecard. That his female portraits were often enough spectacular and well-known might simply have ratcheted up client demand.
