I, too, visited the Stockbridge Rockwell 'museum' in 1989 as part of my one and only (alas) visit to America to celebrate my 25th wedding anniversary. I remembered Rockwell from the covers of the magazines which, for some inexplicable reason, were often found in barbers' shops or doctors' waiting-rooms 'over here'.

I think he is a tremendously good artist and I have several reproductions bought from Stockbridge hanging on my walls. The elderly gentleman and lady who were acting as guides told me that they had actually been used by Stockwell as models for some of his pictures. I am also delighted that Paul Johnson, no mean critic, rates Stockwell up there amongst the 20th century 'greats'.

Also, I would like to thank you for your always interesting blog which I dip into regularly from time to time.

I am a committed fan of Rockwell and am unshakable in my conviction that he was one of the greatest artists of the 20th century. I too am fascinated by his interest in color effects, as I am interested in his construction of human form, particularly in the years 1924-1940, when he was at his most painterly.

Of course, when I wrote "... rates Stockwell ...", I meant 'Rockwell'. Duh!
