Do you in the US have designs of sinks that have come in lately in the UK, whereby if you turn the tap(s) on too vigorously the stream of water jets across the bowl and onto your trousers?

dearieme -- Maybe. But in a number of places the Powers That Be restrict the water pressure coming into a house to save the planet or somesuch excuse. Less chance of getting squirted under that circumstance, thinks I.

Ah. In our usual plumbing the kitchen sink is connected directly to the mains but the rest of the house receives its water from a tank in the loft. (This is intended to make it difficult for water to return from the house to foul the mains.) So the water 'head" in, say, the basin in the upstairs bathroom might be only about twelve feet. That's why lots of us install pumped showers.
