I did not witness any Hanging, only the building of the gallows. It was in Richland County MT. On the court house lawn in Sidney, MT. I do not know if the actual hanging took place. I saw them build it and test it out with sand bags. I belive I was about 6 when this happened. They also covered the gallows in tarps after it was completed.

My mother was born in 1929 and said she witnessed the hanging in Missoula. She rode her bike there. Are you certain it was not public?

Why would I be certain? I can only be as certain as news sources and the internet. I'm going by the news that it was inside the jail and semi-private. "The gallows were specially built inside the jailhouse and the hanging was done in a very quiet, dignified manner with no news reporters and only a few invited guests. All former hangings had been conducted in the open jail yard with a stockade placed around the gallows and the infamous "Gallopin' Gertie‟ gallows used." You might ask your mother why she was inside the jail and/or an invited guest in 1943, or if it was one of the previous hangings which were visible in the open jail yard per the article.

My grandfather showed me an engraved invitation to what he said was the last hanging in Montana. He was invited. If this is the same one, than it would appear that it had a very limited audience. I believe my grandfather was the Justice of the Peace in Dawson Co. in 1943.

Sheriff McClain's son, Bobby witnessed the hanging and related the story to me before he passed away some years ago. In those days the Sheriff and his family resided in the Jail, so Bobby's presence under foot wasn't uncommon.

According to Bobby, the hanging was in the stairway of the old jail.
