We've had cable internet for a while, given that the great dsl gizmo doesn't want to touch my semi-gritty and highly down market neighborhood (Thanks, Mitch!). Life became very quiet and serene recently when I sliced the phone line with the hedge trimmer (please don't ask how). We found ourselves strangely reluctant to revive the line where the outside world could reach us.

Point here is this: You have the power to choose how people can reach you! Choose wisely!

I'd go to the National Do Not Call Registry and register your phone number. Within a very short time after registering my number, the telemarketing calls dropped off to nearly zero. The only ones who call are DirectTV (with whom I have an account, so I think they get a free pass) and the occasional local business who probably doesn't really qualify as a telemarketer in the strictest sense.

Or, heck, go all the way and ditch the home phone! Robin and I did earlier this year and haven't missed it one bit.

We're already on the do not call registry, but anyone with whom you have a previous business relationship gets a free pass.
