According to Professor Maule, I need to start up some sort of rental arrangement with my friend's uncle so that we're under the same rental umbrella, necessitating his tax-free travel to Minnesota (where he has family) and my tax-free travel to Hawaii (where there is warmth). This seems to be a very strong argument in favor of owning rental units in different states - although I'm sure that's just asking to not get your rent on time or get charged some exorbitant tax rate. I appreciate it that Professor Maule used Minnesota as an example, although it's not nearly as snowy here at the moment as his picture suggests.
